Richmondshire Independents are registered at the Electoral Commission  as a properly constituted group and this website seeks to:

  • inform the electorate and others about the work carried out by its elected councillors in political events and activities within their own wards and beyond;
  • outline their roles as elected councillors at both Richmondshire District Council and North Yorkshire County Council;
  • serve as a database and reference resource for specific information on members of the group and its elected councillors;

During the Council from 2011-2015 the Richmondshire Independents joined with the other independent members at RDC and formed a collective grouping called 'The Independents'. That meant the Council was under Independent Control - it had a majority over the combined numbers of the remainder of the Council.

At the elections held on May 7th 2015 the following Richmondshire Independents were elected - Helen Grant in Scotton, Angie Dale in Colburn, William Heslop in Gilling West and Paul Cullen in Hipswell.

Of the 34 seats up for election, Conservatives increased their numbers to 21(+7), with 11 Independents(-7) and 2 Liberal Democrats. The increase in turnout as a result of the General Election being on the same day obviously helped the Conservatives and observation of the voting pattern with 2 Conservatives standing in many wards showed that for many seats the voting reflected national trends i.e for the party rather than the candidate. As such the Independents did well to retain many of their seats. If the current General Election cycle stays at 5 years then it will be 20 years before Local and General Elections are again on the same day!

On turnout in RDC the 2015 election was 64.5%, the highest turnout since 1979 and generally 20% up on previous elections.

Richmondshire Independents have decided not to join with other groups of independents at RDC in any formal grouping but will obviously work with other bonafide independents to hold the Conservative administration to account..

We also have many Richmondshire Independents on a number of Town and Parish Councils including those at Colburn, Scotton, Hipswell, Richmond and Hudswell.
